Let it Ride Poker

Let it Ride is a variety of poker where the player does not compete against other players, nor does he compete against the dealer. This poker game is based on the hand value that is made from three “hole” (or face-down) cards and two community cards.

In Let it Ride poker a player makes three wagers up front. Usually these bets have to be at least $5 each, but different casinos have different rules. During the course of the game the player will have the opportunity to “take back” two of the three bets. The house edge in this type of poker is 3.6%.

After all bets are placed each player, including the dealer, is dealt three cards face-down. Before anyone looks at his or her hand, the dealer discards one of his cards without looking at it first. At this time everyone looks at his three card hand. If a player feels fairly sure he isn’t going to have a winning hand, he can signal to the dealer that he wants to take back his first bet.

Once everybody at the table has decided to either take back his first bet or “let it ride”, the dealer flips one of his two cards upright. Using the three hole cards and the one community card each player again decides whether he thinks he has a winning hand, and has the opportunity to take back the second bet or let it ride.

The decision in the first round of betting has no bearing on the decision in the second round. In other words, someone who took back a first round bet can let the second round bet ride, and someone who let the first round bet ride can take back the second bet.

At this time the dealer reveals his other card and all the players use their three hole cards and the two community cards to create a five card poker hand. The third bet stays on the table regardless of the disposition of the first two.

To qualify a player must have a pair of tens or better. Different casinos have different pay tables, but a typical pay table looks something like this:

Hand

Payout

Royal Flush  1,000 for 1
Straight Flush  200 for 1
Four of a Kind  50 for 1
Full House  11 for 1
Flush  8 for 1
Straight  5 for 1
Three of a Kind  3 for 1
Two Pair  2 for 1
Pair of Ten or Higher  1 for 1

If your three cards contain a pair of tens or better, three cards to a royal flush, three cards to a straight flush, or ten-jack-queen, you should “let it ride” or keep your first bet on the table.

If, upon the dealer revealing his first card, you have a pair of tens or better, four cards to a flush, four cards to an outside straight, or four high cards (ten or higher), you should again “let it ride” or keep your second bet on the table.
